Curriculum - Achieving Success

Key Stage 3 (Years 7,8, & 9)

The National Curriculum provides a broad and balanced framework, but our imaginative approach allows for considerable choice and curric1_120_01diversity as pupils move through the school.  In Key Stage 3, pupils study English, Maths, Science, ICT, Technology, History, Geography, Expressive Arts, a Modern Foreign Language, Physical Education and Religious Education.  Citizenship is also delivered as a part of Personal, Health and Social Education lessons.

curric2_120Pupils in Year 7 follow a new integrated curriculum for 8 lessons a week.  This helps pupils to develop their personal learning and thinking skills and we use the very latest methods of teaching and learning.

Year 9 pupils are offered careful guidance in choosing Key Stage 4 course options that recognise their individual strengths and interests and their aspirations for the future. Parents are involved fully in this process.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

We offer a wide ranging and balanced programme of GCSE, Applied GCSE and BTEC courses, as well as ASDAN awards and work related learning programmes, matching courses carefully to the individual needs of pupils.  All pupils study GCSE courses in curric3_120English Language, Mathematics and Science.  In addition pupils choose an options subject from a range of subjects, including several new courses (e.g. Dance, Media Studies, Health & Social Care, Business Studies and General Studies).  All pupils can achieve up to 10 GCSEs by the end of Year 11.

curric4_120A small group of pupils can achieve up to 5 GCSEs from a range of vocational subjects taught in association with Dearne Valley College, Barnsley College and other work-based learning providers.

Thus all pupils are provided with a firm foundation for further education, training, or employment.
