As part of our continued drive to raise standards of attainment at Wombwell High School we have opted into a government funded programme called the National Challenge. This programme seeks to raise the numbers of pupils leaving school with at least 5 A* - C including English and Maths. It is recognised that pupils who achieve this level of performance stand a better chance of securing high quality further education, training or employment.
Participating in this programme has brought additional resources to the school meaning that we have been able to offer a great deal of extra support to pupils in Year 11.
We have taken a number of steps to ensure the highest possible standards of learning and teaching so that your son or daughter has the best possible chance of achieving excellent results in the summer.
Specifically we have;
Instructed teachers to report more frequently on pupils' progress in class
Appointed extra staff in English and Maths to reduce class size and improve the focus of tuition
Put on extra classes for exam practice and coursework catch-up in English on Monday Periods 3-5, Monday after school and Wednesday after school
Introduced end of unit progress tests in Maths
Arranged revision classes in Maths for Foundation and Higher pupils on Mondays after school
Supplied pupils with a revision CD and personalised revision programme called ‘Maths Watch'
Provided additional support time for intervention work during Tuesday Period 5 Mentoring in the George Beedan Learning Centre
Made plans to enter pupils for additional qualifications in Asdan, IT, literacy and numeracy
Taken steps to run revision conferences during the first week of the Easter holidays
Instructed all departments to provide pupils with lists of revision classes and topics in all other subjects
Organised 2 one day revision conferences for English and Maths; one to take place before Easter and one to take place after Easter
Introduced a weekly prize draw based on high attendance, no lates, no detentions and no patrol call outs. If pupils meet the criteria they will be entered for the draw which will lead to the award of 5 prizes of £10 each worth of Meadowhall gift vouchers.
Clearly this is an important time for our students and we are determined to ensure that they makes the best possible use of the support on offer. Attendance at after school revision classes and during Mentoring is compulsory. Please ensure that your child has copies of all revision classes which have been broken down into weekly topic coverage by departments and that they display these in a prominent place at home. They should highlight those classes they intends to go to each week.
If you have any concerns about your child attending these classes please contact Mr Iwaskow, Year 11 Pupil Progress Manager, at school immediately.
Indeed, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any general concerns or any other issues you would like to discuss. We will do our best to provide all the support necessary to help our students succeed.
