Oakwell 2010

Year 8 Football Final at Oakwell

Wombwell High School's Year 8 football team went to Oakwell stadium on Friday 30th April 2010 to play in the Barnsley Schools Football Final. Their opponents, Kingstone School, had already won the South Yorkshire Cup and were looking for a double. Wombwell had already drawn with Kingstone in the league 1-1, a tight affair which both teams could have won.

The cup final was no different with both teams playing some exciting football. In the first half Wombwell played some good direct football, which resulted in a good strike by Joel Hunt who was thwarted by a great save from the Kingstone goalkeeper. The rest of the half was played mostly in midfield with very few chances on goal.

In the second half Wombwell came out strong but were unable to make a break through with shots from Tom Colville and Tom Watson. Kingstone probably had the best chance but stand in goalkeeper, Adam Wallace and defenders Max Phillis and Macauley Evans managed to close down the Kingstone striker who put the chance wide. So the game ended 0-0 and we went straight to penalties. Mr Iwaskow had to select 5 penalty takers from the many volunteers.

Kingstone took the first penalty and hit the post, which put Wombwell in the ascendancy. They then managed to score all 5 of their penalties. Well done to the takers. It finished 5-4 to Wombwell and the pupils brought the cup home to clapping and cheering from the students at school. Mr Iwaskow would like to thank all the players for a great season and all the parents who came to watch. Well done!

Year 11 Football Final at Oakwell

On 30th April, the undefeated Wombwell Year 11 football team of 09/10, played at Oakwell in an epic final against Holgate. Wombwell were clearly shaky for the first 10 minutes of the game with many of the players looking nervous at playing in front of a large crowd. They soon picked up their performance and started playing some exciting football. Holgate, against the run of play, scored a fantastic free-kick through their striker, which inspired the Wombwell players into action. Soon after they were level after scoring a penalty, which was thoroughly deserved. The half time score was 1-1.

Mr Hall, dressed for the occasion in his suit, issued the orders and encouraged the team during the half-time team talk. The players began the second half well but in a tight affair they struggled to make a break through. They had to be watchful of the Holgate attack but were on top and created several half chances from long throws and corners. As the game approached penalties, Holgate broke and had an attempt pushed onto the post by the Wombwell keeper. Unfortunately the rebound went straight to the Holgate centre forward who sent the ball crashing into the back of the net. The Wombwell players tried to respond but only had a couple of minutes left. Mr Hall sent on some substitutes but they could not manage to get another chance. The Wombwell pupils showed great character in defeat although they were clearly disappointed. They performed well all season and were great role models for the other students within school.

Well done to them and their manager Mr Hall.
